Torn Apart captures the duality of the journey towards embodied healing from traumatic stress. The torn, frustrated feeling reflects the well-trained dissociation mechanism, leaving the subject feeling defeated, confused, numb, and disoriented.
There is a constant battle, wavering between heightened alertness and a longing for calm. The physical experience is intense and increasingly disconnected from the old trauma narrative. The artwork represents the two sides of learning to dwell more deeply within the body – the desire alongside the fear and resistance.
Amidst this, there is a search for a manageable way forward – to be present with the self, yet also to dissociate and escape. The connection to one’s physicality is both terrifying and in some ways unnatural. The pull is strong to fully engage, yet the impulse to flee is equally powerful.
Torn and divided, existing between two worlds and realities – embodied and the haze of survival. Oh, how the subject longs to resolve this doubt and fragmentation. But alas, this is the lived reality. This artwork from 2024 explores the theme of descending ever deeper into one’s own physicality.
